"Area 40" is 148 acres of vacant land on the east side of Prairie City Road and south of Highway 50 in the City of Folsom, California. Area 40 was leased to Aerojet Rocketdyne, Inc. from 1960 through the early 1970s, with portions of the property used during that time for burning of residual propellant and laboratory waste materials. With oversight from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA); State of California, Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC); and State of California, Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB), Aerojet is currently implementing the cleanup described in the Remedial Action Plan (RAP) approved by DTSC in August 2018.
The RAP required multiple cleanup steps, including excavation of contaminated soil, installation of a groundwater treatment system, erection of fencing, installation of an owl box/raptor perch, and recording of land use covenants. As of December 2024, Aerojet has completed the excavation of contaminated soil, installation of the groundwater treatment system, erection of fencing, and the installation of the owl box/raptor perch. Land use covenants are currently being developed. Links to the two cleanup completion reports follow.
